The Hebrew name means "gates of justice." There are several transliterations, of which "Sha'arei Tzedek" might be the most famous one.
Shaare Zedek is most well known for its extensive decontamination facilities capable of responding to terrorist attack. Some of the facilities are in the underground parking garage area of the hospital. Shaare Zedek's decon facilities served as inspiration for New York's largest hospital decon facility at New York Downtown Hospital.
Shaare Zedek was the first large hospital in Jerusalem. After the Ottoman Turks gave permission in the 1890s, and with funding from European donors, the hospital was built on Jaffa Road, two miles outside the Old City. Its opening ceremony took place on January 27, 1902. Dr. Moshe Wallach was the director from then until 1947. Schwester Selma lived in the hospital and cared for abandoned children.

Since occupying the current location, Shaare Zedek has transformed itself from a respected regional hospital into a major multi-disciplinary medical center with an international reputation for excellence in many areas of expertise, including: cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, women’s health, neonatology, oncology and palliative medicine, medical genetics, pediatric neurology, pediatric nephrology, laparoscopic surgery, hand surgery and Gaucher's Disease.
