About the Israel Museum

The Israel Museum is the largest cultural institution in the State of Israel and is ranked among the leading art and archaeology museums in the world. Founded in 1965, the Museum houses encyclopedic collections, including the most extensive holdings of biblical and Holy Land archaeology in the world. In just forty years, the Museum has built a far-ranging collection of nearly 500,000 objects thanks to a legacy of gifts and the support from its circle of patrons worldwide.
One of the most recent and exciting additions to the Museum is the Second Temple Era model of Jerusalem. The model reconstructs the topography and architectural character of the city as it was prior to 66 CE, the year in which the Great Revolt against the Romans erupted, leading to the eventual destruction of the city and the Temple. Originally constructed on the grounds of Jerusalem’s Holyland Hotel, the model is now a permanent feature of the Museum’s twenty-acre campus, adjacent to the Shrine of the Book.

President Bush Honors 60th Anniversary of the State of Israel

The Israel Museum, Jerusalem
THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all for coming. Never a man to shy away from a microphone. (Laughter.) Didn't realize it gets so cold here in Jerusalem in May. Yes, but thanks for coming.
I first want to thank James Snyder and the museum folks for hosting this fantastic reception. (Applause.) Mr. President, thanks for joining us, and Mr. Prime Minister, I'm so honored that you all would take time to be here, as I am. Members of your cabinet, members of the Knesset. We've got leaders from around the world who are here to share in this fantastic celebration. Laura and I really wanted to come by and say thanks to our fellow Americans for coming as well. (Applause.) ...
The Israel Museum, Jerusalem (Hebrew, Muze'on Yisrael, Yerushalayim) was founded in 1965 as Israel's national museum. It is situated on a hill in the Givat Ram neighborhood of Jerusalem, near the Knesset, the Israeli Supreme Court, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Jerusalem mayor Teddy Kollek was the driving spirit behind its establishment.
The museum complex was designed in the late 1950s by Alfred Mansfeld and Dora Gad, with the Shrine of the Book designed by Armand Phillip Bartos and Frederick John Kiesler, and the Billy Rose sculpture garden designed by Isamu Noguchi It is an example of postwar Modernist architecture consisting of low, rectangular, flat-roofed buildings spread out on the hilltop, surrounded by a maze of courtyards. The museum is currently undergoing major renovations scheduled for completion by the end of 2009.
Covering an area of 47,000 square meters on a 20-acre site, the museum is ten times larger than it was when it opened. Under the current plan, new buildings will be added and the long walk up to the entrance will be shortened.

The Shrin of the Book

Perhaps the most important part of Israel Museum is the shrine of the Book, which contains the priceless biblical  manuscripts found in 1947 in caves at Qumran on the shores of the Dead Sea. Sponsored by the Gottesman Foundation, a special building was erected to house the precious scrolls.
